Owens Corning Underlayment & Deck Repair: The San Antonio Owner's Guide
We stock and install Owens Corning-compatible underlayment and deck repair materials throughout San Antonio, with most repairs running between $450 and $1,900 depending on how much decking has rotted and which underlayment your roof system calls for. If your roof deck is soft underfoot or the underlayment has torn away near the eaves, that’s the failure most owners catch only after a leak shows up inside. The good news: this is a repair we handle regularly, and unlike the big-box swap, we match the material to your existing Owens Corning system rather than slapping on whatever is on the truck.
Mercer Roofing Co San Antonio is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Owens Corning. What we are is a local crew that has worked with Owens Corning roofing systems long enough to know exactly which underlayment and decking specs hold up to South Texas heat and which ones don’t.
Which Owens Corning Models This Applies To
Owens Corning doesn't sell underlayment as a single universal product. They make several lines, and the one your roof needs depends on the shingle system above it and the deck material below it. In San Antonio, we commonly see three situations:
- Deck Defense and Deck Seal synthetic underlayments, used under Owens Corning Duration and Oakridge shingle lines. These are high-traction synthetics, not felt paper, and they're specced for specific exposure ratings depending on the shingle's wind warranty.
- ProArmor, their premium synthetic, which differs from Deck Defense in tear strength and UV exposure rating. If your original installer used ProArmor and someone later patches with a lighter generic synthetic, the overlap can fail at the seam within two or three Texas summers.
- VentSure and WeatherLock self-adhered ice-and-water barriers, used in valleys and at eaves. Roofers in San Antonio often skip the eaves membrane because we don't get ice dams, but the WeatherLock spec matters for wind-driven rain on north-facing slopes.
The compatibility gotcha nobody tells you about: Owens Corning's synthetic underlayment has a side-printed overlap guide, and if your installer lines up the laps wrong, the manufacturer's wind warranty on the whole system is void. We see this regularly on homes in Alamo Heights where older decks were re-roofed quickly. The fix isn't just replacing a torn section; it's matching the lap pattern to the original spec so the next storm doesn't peel it back.

Signs Your Owens Corning Underlayment & Deck Repair Is Failing
- Soft spots or bounce in the deck when you walk the roof. This is plywood or OSB rot, usually from water sitting under the shingles because the underlayment failed first. San Antonio's summer humidity accelerates rot once it starts; a soft deck never firms back up on its own.
- Wrinkling or tearing synthetic underlayment visible at the eaves or rake edges. Sun exposure breaks down the polymer surface, especially on south-facing edges. Once the top layer goes chalky and brittle, the tear resistance drops fast.
- Interior water stains on ceilings after a hard, wind-driven rain but not a light one. That pattern points to a seam failure in the underlayment, not a missing shingle. Water only gets pushed sideways into the lap when the wind drives it, which is exactly when most San Antonio homeowners first notice it.
- Granule buildup in gutters paired with shingles that look 'bald' at the edges. The underlayment is getting direct UV exposure where the shingle has broken down, and ultraviolet light will chew through most synthetics within a season.
- Rust stains or nail pops along the deck seams. The fasteners have loosened, and the underlayment has shifted. It's a small sign, but it tells you the system is moving, and seams are the first place water finds a path.

AfterReplacement Cost & What's Included
In San Antonio, expect to pay $450 to $900 for a localized deck repair and underlayment replacement up to about 100 square feet. If the rot runs under multiple shingle courses or the deck needs full sheet replacement across a slope, the job lands between $1,200 and $1,900. The big variables are the deck material (OSB is cheaper than plywood, but we won't install OSB on a repair if the original deck was plywood), the underlayment line your Owens Corning system requires, and whether the rafter tails or fascia need sistering.
Every repair from Mercer Roofing includes a written price before we start, so the number we quote is the number you pay. No change orders mid-job unless you ask us to expand the scope. Parts and labor are spelled out separately, and the work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it's not right within a year, we make it right. That includes a free second visit if the repair fails.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check your attic for water stains, look for daylight coming through the deck, and inspect the eaves from the ground with binoculars. What we don't recommend is walking a damaged deck or peeling back shingles to 'take a look.' A soft deck on a San Antonio roof in July is hot, slick, and one wrong step from a foot through the plywood and a fall. That's how people get seriously hurt.
The DIY failure point on this repair is almost always the underlayment lap. Getting the overlap direction and exposure right matters for wind warranty and water shedding, and most homeowner patches peel back in the first big thunderstorm. If you've got a soft spot or a visible tear, call us at (254) 276-4369. We'll tell you honestly whether it's a small patch or a bigger deck problem before you spend a dollar.
FAQs
Owens Corning synthetic underlayments are rated for 25 to 50 years in ideal conditions, but San Antonio's UV exposure and heat cycles realistically put you at 15 to 25 years before the surface starts degrading if it's exposed. Properly covered under shingles with intact laps, it should last the life of the roof system. Call (254) 276-4369 and we'll inspect yours and give you an honest remaining-life estimate.
Small tears and punctures can be patched with the correct Owens Corning-compatible material if the surrounding area is still sound. Rot in the deck below it cannot be patched; the affected sheet has to come out and get replaced. Call (254) 276-4369 for a free estimate, and we'll tell you which situation you have.
A localized repair under 100 square feet usually takes one day, including removing the shingles, cutting out the bad decking, installing new underlayment with correct laps, and re-shingling. Larger deck replacements with rafter work can run two to three days. We give you the timeline in writing before work starts.
We keep Deck Defense, ProArmor, and WeatherLock on hand in the most common widths, along with decking material in both plywood and OSB. If your system needs an Owens Corning line we don't have on the truck, our local supplier in San Antonio has it same-day in nearly every case. We also stock GAF and CertainTeed equivalents for homes with mixed systems, so the patch matches what's already on your roof.
