Boral Ridge Vent Installation: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide

Boral ridge vent installation in San Antonio typically costs $420 to $680 for a standard single-story home, and we can usually get to it within two to three business days. Most owners discover the problem after a hard rain, when water stains bloom on the ceiling near an exterior wall, or when they spot cracked plastic shards in the gutter after a hail storm. The ridge vent is the long strip running along the peak of your roof, and when it fails, your attic stops breathing. Hot air gets trapped, shingles age faster, and moisture finds its way in.

We stock Boral-compatible ridge vents and the matching end caps, connectors, and fasteners on our trucks. If you have a Boral roof and your ridge vent is cracked, sun-baked, or leaking, this page tells you exactly what’s involved in replacing it, what it should cost in San Antonio, and how to tell a real repair from a band-aid.

Which Boral Models This Applies To

Boral’s roofing line in Texas centers on their stone-coated steel panels, which typically pair with a low-profile external baffle ridge vent rather than a shingle-over style. The two vent configurations we see most often in San Antonio are the Boral Ridge Vent, a rigid aluminum vent with a baked enamel finish, and the Boral Universal Ridge, which works with both the flat and barrel profiles on their steel tile panels. If your roof is Boral steel, you’re not looking at a shingle-over vent; you’re looking at a mechanical vent that screws onto the ridge with exposed fasteners and rubber washers.

The quickest way to identify yours is to look at the end cap. Boral stamps the profile series on the underside of most end caps, usually a letter code like “B” for barrel or “F” for flat. The vent openings themselves run either 9 inches or 12 inches of net free area per linear foot depending on the series. If you can’t read the stamp, measure across the ridge opening. A 10-inch opening means the standard vent; an 11.5-inch opening means the wide-body. Mixing them up creates a vent that either chokes airflow or leaves a gap for blown rain. We carry both widths and match them to the existing profile rather than forcing whatever’s on the shelf.

Mercer Roofing Co San Antonio is an independent roofing contractor. We’re not affiliated with Boral, but we install and service their products regularly across the San Antonio area.

Signs Your Boral Ridge Vent Installation Is Failing

  • Water stains on ceilings near exterior walls. When the rubber washers on the vent fasteners crack from UV exposure, water wicks down the screw threads and travels along the back of the drywall. The stain often appears two or three feet in from the wall, which throws people off. Water is following the ceiling joist, not the wall line.
  • Plastic or aluminum fragments in the gutter. San Antonio hail doesn’t have to be huge to crack an aging vent. Once the vent body starts to break apart, the pieces wash down the slope and settle in your gutters. If you see silver or dark gray shards, the vent is already compromised.
  • Attic feels like an oven in the evening. A working ridge vent pulls hot air out as it rises. When it’s clogged with nesting material or the baffles have collapsed, the attic holds heat well past sundown. Your AC works harder and your July bill shows it.
  • Visible rust or corrosion on the vent body. Boral’s aluminum vents hold up well, but the powder coating can fail along the cut edges after years of UV and alkaline dust. Once the bare metal shows through and oxidation starts, the vent is on borrowed time.
  • You hear a rattling or flapping during wind. Loose fasteners back out slowly, and the vent starts to lift on the windward side. That movement tears the rubber washers and widens the screw holes. Left alone, the vent will eventually tear off entirely in a storm.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In San Antonio, expect to pay between $420 and $680 for a full Boral ridge vent replacement on a ranch-style home with a single ridge line. That’s parts and labor, with the old vent removed, the ridge decking inspected, new vent sections installed with new fasteners and washers, and the end caps sealed. Two-story homes or houses with multiple ridge lines run higher, usually $700 to $950, because of staging and the extra material.

What drives the range is the condition of what’s under the vent. If the old fasteners have wallowed out the holes, we’ll need to add a continuous strip of flashing tape under the vent body before it goes back on. That’s about $60 in material and it’s the single most important step most quick-and-cheap installs skip. It’s why some San Antonio homeowners get a new vent that leaks within two years. The vent wasn’t the problem. The sealing was.

Every Boral ridge vent installation we do in San Antonio includes a written price before any work starts, no exceptions, and the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the vent leaks or fails within a year, we come back and make it right at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely do two things yourself. First, photograph the vent from the ground with a zoom lens, especially the end caps and any visible fasteners. That gives us a head start on identifying the profile. Second, you can peek into the attic on a sunny afternoon and look for pinholes of light around the ridge line. If light gets through, water can too.

What you shouldn’t do is walk the ridge yourself. Boral steel panels are slick, especially in the morning dew, and a 6/12 pitch at the ridge is no place to be balancing tools without the right equipment. We see DIY ridge vent repairs go wrong when homeowners over-tighten the fasteners and crack the vent body, or under-tighten and leave a path for water. The fasteners on a Boral vent are spec’d at 15 to 18 inch-pounds. Most people with a drill have no idea what that feels like and end up stripping half of them.

Grant Whitlock grew up in Los Angeles and learned the trade through the construction technology program at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College before putting it to work on real roofs in real weather. He’s been on Boral steel roofs in San Antonio long enough to know that a patient hand beats a fast drill every time. “A roof shouldn’t be something you worry about – that’s our job.” If the ridge vent is failing, call us at (254) 276-4369 and we’ll get a written estimate in your hands before anyone sets a ladder on the house.
