GAF Shingle Repair: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide

GAF shingle repair in San Antonio typically runs $325 to $650 for a standard field repair of 8 to 12 shingles, including matching materials, labor, and disposal. Most repairs on GAF Timberline and GAF HDZ roofs we complete the same day we diagnose the issue, weather permitting. You’ll usually spot the problem first as granules collecting in your gutters or a dark patch on the roof where the mat is showing through.

We stock GAF Timberline HDZ and Ultra HD shingles on our trucks in the most common San Antonio colors: Charcoal, Weathered Wood, and Barkwood. If your color is less common or has been discontinued, we can order it direct from GAF distribution in the region, which usually adds one to two business days. Here’s the part most homeowners miss: GAF shingles from different manufacturing years can have slight granule color shifts, even in the same named color. We account for that by blending shingles from multiple bundles when needed, so the repair doesn’t look like a patch.

Which GAF Models This Applies To

Most GAF shingle repairs in San Antonio involve the Timberline line, specifically Timberline HDZ (introduced 2019) and the earlier Timberline HD (2010 to 2019). We also regularly repair GAF Royal Sovereign 3-tab shingles, which are common on homes built before 2005 in neighborhoods like Jefferson, Woodlawn Lake, and older pockets of Alamo Heights. The Timberline Ultra HD and Camelot II lines appear less often but share the same repair methods.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha: Timberline HD and Timberline HDZ are close but not perfectly identical. The HDZ has a wider nailing zone and a slightly different shingle exposure profile. Mixing them on the same roof slope creates a visible step. If your roof is HD, we install HD from our supplier’s overstock; if it’s HDZ, we install HDZ. The only way to know which you have for certain is the bundle wrapper, but if that’s long gone, we measure the shingle exposure and check the nail strip width from the attic side. That tells us what we’re matching in about ten minutes.

As for OEM versus aftermarket: for GAF specifically, we use genuine GAF shingles on every repair. Aftermarket generics don’t match the granule blend, the shadow line, or the algae-resistance copper content in the GAF granule coating. On a roof where half the value is how uniform it looks from the street, saving forty bucks on a generic shingle is the wrong trade.

One more thing worth knowing: Mercer Roofing Co San Antonio is an independent roofing contractor. We’re not affiliated with GAF, and we don’t need to be. We install and repair their shingles to manufacturer spec, and we know their product line cold.

Signs Your GAF Shingle Repair Is Failing

  • Granules in the gutters, especially after a San Antonio hailstorm. GAF shingles shed a small amount of granules in year one, but steady granule loss after year five means the asphalt top coat is oxidizing faster than it should. Hail damage accelerates this dramatically. If your downspouts are collecting what looks like coarse sand after every rain, multiple shingles are likely compromised.
  • Curled or lifted corners on south-facing slopes. San Antonio’s sun beats down hardest on south and west roof faces. Over time, the asphalt shrinks, and GAF shingle corners begin to curl upward. Once a corner lifts more than a half inch, wind can grab it and tear the shingle free.
  • Missing shingle tabs after a storm. This is the one most people find when they walk their property the morning after a big blow. GAF’s Seal-A-Ridge and Dura Grip adhesive strips are strong, but a 60 mph gust after a decade of thermal cycling can defeat them. One missing tab exposes the shingle below it, and the clock starts on a leak.
  • Dark spots or moss on the north slope. San Antonio’s humid stretches, especially April through June, create conditions where algae and moss grow on shingles that stay shaded. GAF shingles with StainGuard protection resist this, but older Timberline HD from before StainGuard became standard can develop streaking. Once moss takes hold, it lifts the shingle edge and lets moisture underneath.
  • Water stains on ceiling drywall, usually near a roof penetration. By the time you see it inside, the shingle repair is no longer optional. The shingle itself may look fine from the ground. What’s failed is often the flashing at a vent pipe, chimney, or valley, hidden by the shingles around it. We diagnose these by looking at the whole assembly, not just the shingle you can see from the driveway.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In San Antonio, a GAF shingle repair on a walkable roof slope runs $325 to $650 for most jobs. That range covers 8 to 12 shingles replaced, new roofing nails, sealant at any exposed nail heads, and haul-away of the old material. Repairs that involve flashing at a chimney or vent pipe add $150 to $350 depending on what we find when we open up the area. Steep-pitch roofs, anything above a 7/12, add a safety line item because we stage scaffolding or use harness equipment. You’ll know that line item exists before we start, in writing.

Every GAF repair we do includes the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the repair fails within a year, we return and make it right at no charge. That’s not a courtesy extended case by case; it’s a written guarantee on every repair, included with every job. The written price you approve before we begin is the price you pay. No change orders, no surprise line items at the end.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely do two things yourself. First, walk the perimeter after a storm and look for missing tabs or shingles in the yard. Second, check your gutters for excessive granules. But climbing onto a San Antonio roof in July is not a safe weekend project. Clay tile and composition shingles both get hot enough to burn skin through jeans, and a fall from even a single-story roofline changes your life. The other honest issue: mismatched shingle color on a repair is visible from the street forever. We match GAF colors so the repair disappears; a big-box bundle of whatever’s in stock won’t do that.

Call (254) 276-4369 and we’ll send a technician who’s background-checked, uniformed, and carrying a photo ID badge. You’ll get their name and photo before they arrive, so you know exactly who’s at your door before they knock.
