Tamko Shingle Repair: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide

Tamko shingle repair in San Antonio typically runs $380 to $740 installed for a standard repair area of 5 to 15 shingles, including materials, labor, and a written 365-day guarantee. Most repairs we schedule are completed within a single visit, and we stock Tamko-compatible Heritage and Elite series shingles on our trucks so we’re not guessing at the supply house while your roof sits open. Homeowners usually discover the problem after a hard San Antonio storm, when granules show up in gutters, or when a slow ceiling stain starts spreading across a bedroom. The shingle didn’t fail overnight. It lost its seal, started lifting, and the wind finished the job.

Which Tamko Models This Applies To

Most Tamko repair calls we run in San Antonio involve the Heritage line, which is the workhorse of the brand and the one you’ll find on thousands of homes from Stone Oak to Alamo Heights. Heritage comes in two main formats: Heritage 30, an architectural shingle with a 30-year limited warranty, and Heritage 50, the heavier 50-year product with a wider exposure. The newer Elite series sits above Heritage in price and thickness, and its color palette runs a little more toward slate and charcoal tones. If you don’t know which one is on your roof, check the leftover bundle in your garage or look at the back of a torn shingle for the series name stamped in the laminate. The compatibility gotcha: Tamko changed the sealant strip pattern on Heritage models around 2015, so a shingle from this year’s run won’t always seat flat against a shingle installed eight years ago. That’s why we pull a sample before quoting, not after tearing off the first row.

OEM versus aftermarket matters more with Tamko than with brands like GAF or Owens Corning because Tamko’s color batches drift more noticeably between plant runs. A Heritage Weatherwood bundle from 2020 and a bundle from 2024 can look like two different colors on the same slope. Aftermarket shingles sold as “Tamko-compatible” in the same color name are usually worse: the granule blend is closer to the name than the roof. If the color has to match a visible front slope, we recommend OEM Tamko product. If it’s a rear slope nobody sees and the budget is tight, a quality aftermarket in the same weight class can work, and we’ll tell you the honest tradeoff before you spend a dollar. We’re an independent San Antonio roofer, not affiliated with Tamko, so our only interest is getting you the right shingle at a price you can see in writing.

Signs Your Tamko Shingle Repair Is Failing

  • Granule loss collecting in gutters or at downspout elbows. Texas sun cooks the asphalt layer over time, and granules start shedding as the bond weakens. A shovel-full of granules isn’t normal wear; it’s a shingle giving up its protective layer.
  • Lifted or flapping shingle tabs on the windward slope. When Tamko’s thermal seal strip fails, the tab loses its grip on the shingle below. The next strong front that rolls through, and San Antonio gets plenty, folds it back like a playing card.
  • Dark stains or soft spots on the ceiling directly under a roof deck. Water travels before it shows itself, so the stain is rarely where the hole is. By the time you see it, the underlayment has been wet for weeks.
  • Bald spots where the fiberglass mat is visible. A shingle down to its mat is one good hail season from becoming a leak. Once the mat is exposed, there’s nothing left to shed water.
  • Curling at the edges, especially on south-facing slopes. Older Tamko shingles, particularly those installed before the 2015 formula update, curl as the oils bake off. Curled edges catch wind and break off at the first real gust.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a standard Tamko repair of 5 to 15 shingles in San Antonio, you’re looking at $380 to $740 installed. That includes the shingles themselves, replacement of any damaged underlayment we uncover, new roofing nails, site cleanup, and a written repair guarantee good for 365 days. The spread exists because roof pitch, height, accessibility, and the slope’s sun exposure all change the labor hours, and some roofs in older San Antonio neighborhoods need an extra care around brittle decking that eats up time. We give you a written line-item price before any work starts, so you’ll know the shingle cost, the labor, and the disposal fee in advance. No change orders unless we open the roof and find something you need to know about, and we’ll show you before we touch it. Every repair includes a free second visit if the fix doesn’t hold within the year.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things from the ground without putting a ladder against the house. Look for missing tabs against the skyline, count the granules in your gutter after a storm, and photograph anything that looks off. What you shouldn’t do is get on a pitched roof with a bundle of shingles under one arm. Roofing work on any slope over a 6/12 pitch, and a lot of San Antonio homes are built that steep, is where we see homeowners get hurt trying to save $400. A fall from even a single-story roof in this city sends people to the hospital every year. If the repair is a small back-slope patch and you have roofing nails, a flat bar, and a weekend, some owners pull it off. But if the shingle is on a steep face, near flashings, or over a living space that’s already showing a stain, call a professional. One wrong nail placement in the seal strip zone and you’ve created a new leak while fixing the old one. Call (254) 276-4369 and we’ll give you a straight price for the repair.
